HOPES Center Relies on More Than 100 Volunteers
It is safe to say that the HOPES Center would not be able to function without the more than 100 volunteers who have provided services during our last fiscal year,( September 1, 2011 through August 31, 2012). A great variety of services are provided by individuals serving as spiritual guides, baristas, store clerks, receptionists, and administrators, as well as professionals in the healing arts program. The 100 plus volunteers contributed more than 7,200 hours of service amounting to a full time equivalency of almost 3 ½ full time employees.
Faith and Howard Wirtz began volunteering at HOPES Center even before the opening day in October 2008. Currently, Faith fills in as a receptionist for a three hour shift each week while Howard is an on-call spiritual guide, sharing his faith and skill. They are lifetime Racine residents who have been married for more than 53 years and exemplify the best of what our so-called retired community has to offer. When asked what she likes most about volunteering here, Faith was quick to state: “Meeting the people that come here and being with the saints who work here.”
