Sister Roserita Kimmel
What first drew you to the Racine Dominican community?
The Racine Dominican high school aspirancy was just beginning– and S. Stanislaus (Mary Michna) was a great recruiter! I was a student in S. Stanislaus’ eighth grade class at Assumption Grotto in Detroit and was inspired by her to become an aspirant in Racine. Although my mother was in favor of the plan, the decision to permit her only child to leave home in 1946 was very hard. As my beloved father died when I was six, Mom would be alone, but she had a strong faith in God’s plans.
What has kept you in the community all these years?
In September of 1951, I was an 18-year-old newly professed Racine Dominican teaching 62 third graders at St. John’s, South Milwaukee – and loving it! I went on to enjoy teaching for nearly 50 years, with 25 of my 28 years as principal being a teaching principal.
What is one particularly cherished memory of your years in ministry?
A highlight in my cherished teaching ministry was S. Marguerite McGee’s joining me in 1968 as an experienced mentor. S. Marguerite became a dear friend, always there to support me in creative endeavors and in difficult times. I still miss teaching and the sheer enjoyment and fun displayed by children in my classes.
