Sister Rita Vander Velden
What first drew you to the Racine Dominican community?
The Racine Dominicans were my teachers, and they were very good. I always wanted to be a sister, and asked to enter the community after eighth grade, but my parents said I was too young.
What has kept you in the community all these years?
The belief that I had a vocation to the Racine Dominicans. On the whole, the years have
been very good.
What is one particularly cherished memory of your years in ministry?
There are many. Serving in Ketchikan, Alaska, was a special ministry – even though it was always cold – because of the people and the place.
