Sister Rita Vander Velden

What first drew you to the Racine Dominican community?
The Racine Dominicans were my teachers, and they were very good. I always wanted to be a sister, and asked to enter the community after eighth grade, but my parents said I was too young.

What has kept you in the community all these years?
The belief that I had a vocation to the Racine Dominicans. On the whole, the years have
been very good.

What is one particularly cherished memory of your years in ministry?
There are many. Serving in Ketchikan, Alaska, was a special ministry – even though it was always cold – because of the people and the place.

What is one thing people today should know about the Racine Dominicans?
That so many sisters have served so many places for such a long time. We 4 are dedicated to education and to serving people in need. Sisters have helped many people in many different ways through the years.

What do you enjoy doing at this time of your life?
Playing cards – especially Sheepshead – with the sisters and my friends from the Valley.
