When Governor Scott Walker attempted to excise “the search for truth” from The Wisconsin Idea, declaring that the mission of the University would "henceforth be to meet the state’s workforce needs,” he was reinforcing a national trend. In our increasingly technological society, the search for truth and the riches enshrined in the humanities are falling prey to the search for jobs and careerism.
What happens to a society when it abandons its quest for meaning? Jean Feraca through the UW-Odyssey Project is taking the ageless and the transformative power of the humanities to the farthest margins, our Wisconsin prisons. In sharing this experience with her usual passion, she will enliven the humanity in all of us.

Jean Feraca retired as a Distinguished Senior Broadcaster with Wisconsin Public Radio after hosting the program, Here On Earth. She brings the unique sensibility of a poet, humanist, and journalist; a lively personal style; and a sense of discovery and delight.
